Menopause Facts - Is it Same in All Women?

What All Women Have To Go Through

All women who go into menopausal all suffer from hot flashes and mood swings. The decrease in estrogen production during this condition causes hormonal imbalance that makes their body go haywire. Hot flashes happen when the entire body starts to warm up without any particular reason, same as you would feel when you blush. Associated with the increase in body temperate is night sweats -- sweating profusely even on cold nights.

Emotional imbalance is observed on women who are under menopause -- sudden bout of sadness, anxiety attack, irritability, anger, and even depression. But aside from being a danger to their own, menopausal women might also become a trigger for problems with their friends and families. Erratic mood swings may cause conflict, or even destroy a relationship if not tightly controlled or when both parties are not informed properly of this condition.

Women might also experience some changes to their sexual behaviors as well. Low libido might cause their sexual capacity to decline, as well as dryness to their vagina causing too much pain during intercourse. Green Tea Protects Against Cancer

Green tea's anti-cancer properties make it one of the most valuable foods and many scientific studies point to its preventive effects against cancer of the breast, prostate, lung, colon, bladder and others.

One of the most important reasons that green tea exhibits such good health promoting properties is that it is endowed with a large number of antioxidant compounds. Of these, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is the most important and is unique to green tea.

However these compounds have beneficial effects in addition to those provided by their antioxidant properties. Other non-antioxidant compounds in green tea make a significant contribution to its cancer preventing properties through anti-inflammatory and other properties.

One of the few placebo controlled clinical studies to look at the effects of green tea on cancer was carried out on men who had early cancer of the prostate gland. After one year, only 3% of those taking green tea extract showed evidence of disease progression while 30% of those in the placebo-taking control group had developed signs of more advanced disease.

A couple of other very recent studies have thrown up some interesting results that show why green tea helps prevent cancer in some people and not in others.

EGCG and other catechin flavonoids, although abundant in green tea, are vulnerable to metabolic breakdown once they have entered the blood stream. The enzyme responsible for the metabolism of green tea is more active in some people than in others. The difference in enzyme activity is governed by an individual's genetic make up.

Individuals whose genes code for high enzyme activity metabolize EGCG and other compounds in green tea more rapidly than those with genes that code for low enzyme activity. A consequence of the greater enzymatic activity of those in the first group is a reduced bioavailability of EGCG compared to those in the second group.

A survey of green tea drinkers found that women who are in the second, low-enzyme activity group derived considerable protection against breast cancer. While those women who fell into the high enzyme activity group failed to derive any protective benefits against breast cancer as their bodies destroyed the EGCG before it could do any good.

The increased activity of a well known peptide in the body, angiotensin II has been implicated in the production of free radicals that, in turn, aggravate the formation of breast cancer.

Angiotensin II is converted from its precursor by angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). Women who have a genome that codes for high ACE activity produce more angiotensin II than those whose genotypes code for low ACE activity. The raised levels of angiotensin II that are associated with higher than normal levels of ACE, are responsible for the production of cancer-causing free radicals.

A recent survey found that those women who have the high activity ACE genotype derive substantial protection against breast cancer if they drink green tea regularly.

The reason is that EGCG and other antioxidant compounds in green tea neutralize the increased numbers of free radicals produced by those women who, because of their genetic make up, have higher than normal levels of ACE and therfore higher than normal levels of free radical-producing angiotensin II.

Drinking four to six cups of tea day is unlikely to cause any adverse effects and provides adequate quantities of EGCG and other polyphenols. However caffeine-free green tea is obtainable for those who avoid drinking beverages containing caffeine. To optimize the beneficial effects of green tea it should be taken between meals. The reason being that EGCG has a higher bioavailability when green tea is taken on an empty stomach.

As with many other valuable plant species, green tea has shown that its principal value to human health is as a preventive rather than a curative agent.

The research into this important beverage has also demonstrated how phytochemicals in our diets can compensate for deficiencies in our genetic make up. Scientific research into other important plant foods indicates that many phytonutrients can even protect those individuals who have genes that make them susceptible to certain cancers.

Some of the evidence presented here shows that green tea does not necessarily help to prevent cancer in everyone who drinks it. It does not mean, however, that compounds in other plants will not do so. As our genomes differ from one person to another, so do our individual responses to disease, food and drugs. In order to maximize the health benefits that plant compounds can provide, we need to drink green tea and other beneficial beverages and eat a wide range of phytonutrient-rich plant foods.

MANGA: Parents Just Don't Understand!

Chances are, if you're reading this, your kids are crazy about Japanese comic books and animation. They're probably begging you to buy them the next book or DVD that you've never heard of. "What's going on here?!" you might ask yourself. "We're Americans! Why do my kids love this Japanese stuff?"

Hopefully, I can help make a little sense of the appeal of Japanese comics. I am a comic book artist and Manga fan that lived in Japan for 2 years. My wife is Japanese and after several years of studying I can say that I'm pretty good at speaking the language. Whether you're a parent or just someone interested in what all the fuss is about, I will do my best to explain.

First of all, the word Manga means comic book in Japanese. Most Manga are a lot smaller in size than American comic books but each issue's length will be about 200 pages per compared to our 24-32. In Japan, these long comic books are put out every month! You usually have one main artist who gets top credit for the penciled and inked art (usually the writing of the story too) but don't be fooled. It would be impossible for one person to do all of the work on a 200 page comic book each month. Trust me, as a comic artist myself, I know. The majority of Manga-ka (comic book artists) in Japan have several assistants working with them. They usually take care of drawing backgrounds and inking panels on all of the pages.

Before living in Japan, I thought that Japanese comic artists never slept! I had no idea that they usually have between 3-5 assistants at one time. Yes, they still have to work hard to keep on schedule but they are not the robots I once thought they were! Why are their comic books so long? Manga is meant to be read quickly as an escape from everyday life. I was amazed to see so many Japanese businessmen on trains reading Manga on the way from work. Students reading Manga during class (I know that's hard to believe for some of you!). The stories usually focus on dynamic action, drama or off beat humor.

I felt very strange living in a society where everything runs smoothly and people are serious about following rules and respecting others. In a place where what's good for the group is better than what's good for an individual, reading Manga seemed to be one thing people could do to just please themselves. People of all ages from 7-87 read comic books in Japan. The comic book stories are much more creative than what is done in America. There are few rules in what kind of story or how crazy an idea should be in Manga.

I think this is one reason people here are buying Manga like it's going out of style! I am a teacher and many middle and high school students tell me that they are bored with the same old super hero stories. They are predictable and tend to get boring because few things work like real life. Super Characters die and come back to life, the bad guys never really get defeated and the idea of a muscular man in tights just looks silly. You won't find superheroes in Japanese comic books. They prefer to show that you don't have to be able to lift a building to overcome a difficult situation and still be self-confident.

Manga tends to have more sympathetic characters that tweens and teens can relate to. There are comics of every genre known to man, such as fantasy and ninja action but there are plenty of romance comics and soap opera style stories. The stories can be more complicated with twists and turns that actually lead you to the real end of the series. Most Manga run for a certain amount of time and then end. They don't go on forever because there is a story to tell and when it's done, it's done.

This leads me to one of the main reasons people love Manga, the art style. Those characters with big eyes and spikey hair! They don't look like the Japanese (or any other ethnic group) but they have energy and life. Their style looks so different than the American comic book art style that kids are drawn to it! Its simple animated look draws them in and the energetic page layouts keep them hooked. One thing to remember though! There is no such thing as a Manga style of art. Japanese comic artists are encouraged to find their own unique style. Believe me, when I would go to the comic shops in Japan, I would see some wild art styles that broke that stereotype that we have of Manga here in the states.

Even though I love Manga and my style has a slight Japanese influence, I hope that young people will grow to appreciate Japanese and American comic books. True, now American comic book art is greatly influenced by the Japanese but I feel like we have a great deal to say. So, if your kids love Manga please encourage them to read. Hopefully, they will be inspired by the creativity of the art and story and begin a love of reading. This will grow and expand into American comic books, Graphic novels and literary novels.

Dreams and Expectations - Has Someone Been Playing Limbo With Yours?

As we grow and mature there are many people who come into our lives - parents, teachers, friends, bosses and spouses. Some inspire, but some aspire to tear you down or to put a cap on your expectations.

"You can't"... "You won't..." "You never..."

It has been my experience that even the people who loved me the most have slowly chipped away at my self belief, though I know they had the best of intentions. If we aren't careful, we'll find ourselves bending backwards to stay under that constantly lowering invisible bar over our level of expectation and self belief.

Who have you listened to? Has someone been playing limbo with your expectations and self belief?

Recently, visiting with childhood cousins and playmates, I was reminded of my eagerness as a young girl. As my cousin put it, "You wanted so much out of life." She was surprised that I had settled for so much less than I had dreamed of and had let life/loved ones beat the drive out of me, somehow. Drive that at one time, she and others were sure would propel me to great things.

Do you even remember what your childhood dreams were? Scripture tells us that: Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise bring healing. PR 12:18

JA 3:4-5 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.

Words can and do destroy!

We must choose to listen to words that launch ships, and turn a deaf ear to those that will sink you and your dreams along with you.

Even more important is that we watch what we say to others! Have you ever been a spectator when someone said something callous and unthoughtful to someone? Have you seen the pain in a child's eyes when a distracted or angry parent said something that could never be taken back?

Just as we must take personal responsibility for the waste that threatens to destroy our planet, we must take responsibility for the damage that we speak into the lives of our offspring, our friends and our peers.

Seek to affirm, encourage and inspire those in your circle of influence. Let your legacy be the people whose child hood dreams you have inspired them to achieve. You may find that by enabling others, you will have exceeded your own expectations.
